Parkview’s new ABA Clinic provides one-on-one sessions in ABA therapy, the highly structured treatment found to be the most effective in changing behavior linked to the autism spectrum disorder (ASD). Treatment for these conditions is intended to:

• Reduce barriers to progress
• Support learning and development at home and in school

ASD can range from mild to severe, depending on the symptoms a person experiences. ABA therapy can be tailored to address your child’s strengths and weaknesses, so they experience their greatest level of success. By changing the child’s environment, this treatment focuses on replacing one type of behavior with a more appropriate behavior.

While each child’s needs are unique, clinic staff can help families address such skills as:

• Adaptive and self-care skills such as dressing, washing hands, using a phone or making a sandwich
• Attending and social referencing such as learning to read facial expressions, learning emotions and how to greet a visitor at the door
• Processing information, problem solving and drawing from memory
• Community interaction such as learning to take a city bus, how to call 911 and how to buy lunch at a restaurant
• Coping and tolerance skills
• Emotional development
• Family relationships
• Language and communication
• Play and leisure skills
• Pre-academic skills
• Reduction of interfering or inappropriate behaviors
• Safety skills
• Self-management
• Social relationships

Therapy eligibility

At this time, patients must meet these criteria to participate in therapy at the ABA Clinic.

• Age 18 months – 7 years
• Diagnosis of Autism Spectrum Disorders (ASD)
• Coverage through Medicaid, on a parent’s Parkview Signature Care medical plan, or parent who is able to cover the cost of therapy out of pocket

How to begin ABA therapy

When a child is diagnosed with Autism Spectrum Disorders (ASD) at Parkview, the child’s or family’s physician can make a referral. However, a physician referral is not required. Referrals can also come from parents seeking positive ways to influence their child’s behavior or enhance other forms of therapy, such as physical, occupational or speech therapies.

Upon referral, the ABA Clinic contacts the family and sends a questionnaire to gather information about symptoms and family history. When the following items are received, clinic staff schedules a tour and an ABA evaluation:

• Proof of diagnosis
• Completed intake questionnaire
• Confirmation of insurance coverage*

Disorders on the spectrum include autism, Asperger's syndrome, pervasive developmental disorder and childhood disintegrative disorder. Screening can take place as early as the 18- months or 24-month well-child visit. Your child’s physician may ask about how your child talks, moves, and interacts with others.
