Last Modified: 7/02/2021

Melodie Gavin, PMHNP-BC, Parkview Behavioral Health Institute, offers a better understanding of post-traumatic stress disorder, including the triggers, symptoms and treatment.

Generally speaking, PTSD is a failure to return to normal after a traumatic event. The individual experiences prolonged changes with highly variable symptoms, which are often misdiagnosed as other conditions. There are many triggers for PTSD, from witnessing violence to having violence acted upon you. The COVID-19 pandemic also brought on or worsened symptoms of PTSD for many.

The important thing is to remember that help is available. PTSD can be treated in a variety of ways. There is hope.

Speak with your healthcare provider about your concerns or call the Parkview Behavioral Health HelpLine at (260) 373-7500 or (800) 284-8439, anytime 24 hours a day.
