Blockages in your blood vessels can lead to life-changing or deadly outcomes, such as heart attack, stroke or amputation. Most blockages develop slowly over time. But, if detected early, they can be treated to prevent a more serious health condition. One way to catch these blockages early, is a vascular screening. This week, we expanded our offering of the Total Vascular Screening ($79), adding several additional locations.
The Total Vascular Screening is now available at Parkview Whitley Hospital, Parkview Warsaw, Parkview Huntington, Parkview LaGrange, Parkview Wabash and Parkview Noble, in addition to the Parkview Heart Institute. The expansion of this program signifies our continued dedication to making our high quality services more accessible to communities outside of Allen County.
Early Detection
The screening can detect abnormal conditions in your neck, abdomen and legs. These conditions can be the beginning stages of build-up that indicate the risk for future heart attack, stroke, restricted blood flow to the legs or an aneurysm (weakening of the blood vessel walls). Early detection, with proper follow-up, can slow or stop the progression of the disease and prevent a future health crisis.
Do I need a doctor’s referral?
No. Because this is an early detection screening, a doctor referral is not required. Your results will be sent to your primary care physician for evaluation and further testing, if needed. If you do not have a primary care physician, we will direct you to the Parkview Welcome Clinic for assistance with follow-up.
Will my insurance cover this screening?
No. Because this is an early detection screening, insurance does not cover this service. Collection of payment will occur at the time of service.
What can I expect?
In the exam area, you will lie on your back. A specially trained vascular sonographer will apply a cool gel to an ultrasound wand. This will be guided painlessly over your neck, and then on your abdomen, in order to identify any early signs of blockage or aneurysm. In addition, blood pressure cuffs will be placed on your arms and ankles. These will detect any unusual changes in pressure, which would point to blockages forming in the legs. The screening can be completed in 30 minutes. Those who have already experienced the screening often express their surprise at just how quick and simple the process is.
