Career advancement

Several career paths exist for professional development of pre-hospital team members who wish to expand their skills, knowledge, and career progression. An increase in hourly pay is associated with successful completion of each career path.

EMT Career Path: Level 1

New or current EMTs can choose an advanced EMT career path program, which includes furthering their education or serving as a primary skills instructor for their peers.

Upon graduation from the program, co-workers receive a sign-on bonus and advance to the title of paramedic. All new paramedics receive training through an additional year-long, full-time orientation with an experienced peer.

Paramedic Career Path: Level 1 and II

Experienced paramedics may continue their career development upon completing orientation. Co-workers who achieve Level I of the paramedic career path engage in community outreach events and participate in professional committees.

To achieve Level II, paramedics achieve a specialty practice certification, as well as effectively serve as instructor or preceptor for their peers.

Impact patient outcomes

Pre-hospital professionals play a vital role in how Parkview provides care to individuals and families in eight counties in northeast Indiana. In addition to skilled EMS crews based at Parkview hospitals, the Parkview Samaritan program provides flight and ground transport within a 100-mile radius from Fort Wayne and Rochester, where the medical helicopters are based.

A Mobile ICU was introduced in 2010 to complement medical flight service. Based at Parkview Regional Medical Center, the Mobile ICU is staffed 24/7 with a critical care registered nurse, a paramedic and an EMT driver. This highly skilled crew has advanced life support (ALS) training.

In addition, the Critical Care Transport is an ALS-certified ambulance that provides rapid transport of critical patients between Parkview Hospital Randallia and Parkview Regional Medical Center.

Since ground transport began in 2010, pre-hospital crews have assisted more than 15,000 patients.

The pre-hospital team also operates the emergency dispatch communication system for seven counties in northeast Indiana.
